2009 Recycling Awards

The Illinois Recycling Association is seeking nominations for its Annual Recycling Awards. Each year, the Association recognizes outstanding recycling and waste reduction efforts by individuals and organizations in Illinois.

This year’s awards will be presented at the Illinois Recycling and Solid Waste Management Conference & Trade Show, June 1-3, 2009 at the DoubleTree Hotel in Bloomington, IL. This premier recycling and solid waste management event in the state provides a forum for business leaders, government officials, and individuals to see and meet some of the top recyclers in Illinois.

AWARD CATEGORIES

  1. Recycler of the Year
    To recognize an individual who has shown a high degree of dedication to the development and advancement of recycling through his or her achievements and long-term commitment.
  2. Outstanding Business Recycling/Waste Reduction Program
    To recognize a business for success in implementing waste reduction and/or recycling activities which have resulted in significant reductions to its waste stream. Specific criteria include: (1) types and quantities of materials recycled; (2) types and quantities of wastes reduced or eliminated; and (3) total percentage of waste stream diverted.
  3. Best Use of a Recycled Material
    To recognize a business that has demonstrated a commitment to using recycled feedstock in the manufacturing of a product. Specific criteria include: (1) percent of recycled content in product(s), both pre- and post-consumer; (2) types and quantities of recycled feedstock used; and (3) resources conserved by using a recycled feedstock in place of virgin raw materials.
  4. Outstanding Recycling Education Program
    To recognize an individual or group for commitment to educating others about the need for, and benefit of, recycling and waste reduction. Specific criteria include: (1) length of service in recycling/waste reduction, (2) description of innovative or unique program, and (3) type and size of audience impacted.
  5. Outstanding Community or Government Program
    To recognize an outstanding community recycling program. The award recipient will be providing successful recycling opportunities for residents. Specific criteria include: (1) percentage of population served, (2) types and quantities of materials collected, and (3) track record of growth and commitment to future enhancements.
  6. Other Potential Categories
    Nominations may be submitted to recognize outstanding efforts other than those in the above categories. Examples might include: (1) Outstanding Service Provider (such as a hauler); (2) Outstanding Government Leadership; (3) Outstanding Household Hazardous Waste Program; or (4) Outstanding Paint/Tire/or Electronics Recycling Program.

Nominations are encouraged to be submitted electronically provided they contain all of the information requested. If submitting by mail, please include one (1) original and three (3) copies of the IRA Awards nomination packet:

  • completed nomination form (Downloadable PDF)
  • summary of the accomplishments/efforts for which the nomination is made
  • support materials to assist the Awards Committee in evaluating the nomination
  • letters of support from other parties
  • one or two relevant photographs (preferably digital on disk) of the individual or organization being nominated, with their products, or performing activities or services

Nominations must be received by: March 31, 2009
